What’s Going On? Is the title of the new Messengers show, where from the perspective of Gospel, a new sonority is given to the greatest hits of mythical Motown.
The immortal songs by Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie, Stapple Singers, Stevie Wonder, The Tempations, The Commodores, Bill Withers, The Jackson 5, Barry White, Kool & the Gang… are now updated with the color and the energy of the Messengers and with original arrangements by their director, Ramon Escalé, combining tradition and modernity, gospel and funk, tenderness and forcefulness, respect and risk.
In fact, Motown’s golden age was nurtured by the sound that was born in the churches of the southern United States in the early 20th century and later became known as Gospel. All the great stars of Motown learned to sing in the churches, where singing was and is much more than simply singing, where the voice becomes the vital and essential element that unites the community before God and before others.
Transferring this visceral way of feeling and expressing oneself to secular music constituted a revolution of such magnitude that it changed music and the way of living it forever.
